Cast Iron Skillet Pizza Taste Test Tuesday features Bon Appetite's 15 Minute Pizza made in a cast iron skillet!

I was very curious to try this Cast Iron Skillet Pizza recipe from Bon Appetite! So, following the 80/20 rule of healthy eating, I thought I’d use some of my 20% to give it a try! It’s really quick and easy and bakes up nicely in the cast iron skillet in just minutes!

All you need is 1 pound of prepared pizza dough (I used Trader Joe’s), marinara sauce or pizza sauce (I prefer DeLallo), some shredded mozzarella cheese, a little olive oil, honey and crushed red pepper flakes to brush on the crust after baking. The sweet/spicy crust is a unique idea and super tasty!!

Preheat oven to 525 degrees. Dust a clean work surface with a little flour and press out the dough to fit up to a 12″ cast iron skillet. Heat the skillet over medium high heat and sprinkle a little flour and corn meal in the pan to prevent sticking, then carefully lay the crust into the hot pan and brush with olive oil. When the crust starts to bubble, sprinkle with salt and pepper.

Spread your favorite marinara or pizza sauce over the dough.

Top with desired amount of mozzarella. Slide the skillet into preheated oven and bake for 8-9 minutes, keeping an eye on it the last couple of minutes.

While it bakes, combine a tablespoon of honey, a splash of water to thin it out a little and a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes.

Brush the crust edge with the honey mixture, it will lacquer the crust! Let rest a few minutes then drizzle with a little olive oil and top with freshly torn basil leaves.

    Wonder how it would work to use half the package of pizza crust, spreading it thinner, as we like a thin crust pizza (saves a few calories too!) Guess you could add a few other favorite toppings too?

      Hi Cheryl! It’s completely customizable, that’s the beauty of pizza, it’s a blank canvas! My favorite has always been a well made cheese pizza with a crust that’s not too crispy or doughy, home-made sauce if I have the time, good quality fresh mozzarella and freshly torn basil…basically ‘Margherita’ style!
